What’s New in Caracol: Map Upgrades, Battle System Overhaul, and More

Hello everyone!

I’m writing this post to share some updates I’ve been working on for Caracol. Over the past few weeks, I’ve focused on improving various aspects of the game — from the map to battles and diplomacy. Here's a quick overview of what's new:

Visual Improvements to the Game Map

First of all, I’ve enhanced the aesthetics of the game map by adding several new layers and visual effects. This should make the map more immersive and easier to read.

Map Expansion to the North

The map has been extended northward to include more Swedish and Danish territories. These nations played a crucial role in the historical conflicts, so I wanted to reflect their importance more accurately in the game.

New Strategic Map Modes

I’ve introduced new special map modes to give players a visual overview of different regional aspects — economic, diplomatic, and military. There are currently four available modes, and I plan to add more in the coming months.

Commanders: A New Gameplay Element

You can now recruit commanders — special characters who can lead your armies. I’ll dedicate a separate article soon to dive into how they work, their abilities, and rules of engagement.

Improved Battle Mechanics

The battle resolution algorithm has been significantly improved. I’ve also added new formations and battle plans to give players more tactical depth during conflicts.

New Diplomatic Action: Imperial Conversion

A new diplomatic option is now available exclusively to Austria. As the holder of the imperial title, Austria can request that non-Catholic factions convert to Catholicism — adding a new religious-political layer to diplomacy.

In the next development phase, I plan to focus more on the Holy Roman Empire. Expect new mechanics tailored specifically for the German territories.

Thank you all for your continued interest and support! If you have suggestions or feedback, feel free to leave a comment below or join the conversation on our Discord server.

See you soon!

Hey Manu,

Development is looking great! Are you going to Gamescom in August perchance? We are hosting a meeting with a few indie GSG developers there. If you're interested, reach out to me at vincent@kaisercatcinema.com
